Thyroid Cancer

What is Thyroid cancer?

Thyroid cancer is a type of cancer that affects the thyroid gland, a small gland in the neck that produces hormones regulating growth and metabolism.

Types of thyroid cancer:

  • Papillary thyroid cancer: Most common type, often slow-growing.
  • Follicular thyroid cancer: Also relatively common, can spread to bones and lungs.
  • Medullary thyroid cancer: Originates from hormone-producing cells, can be aggressive.
  • Anaplastic thyroid cancer: Rare, aggressive, and fast-growing.

Symptoms:

  • Lump or swelling in the neck
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Hoarseness or voice changes
  • Pain in the neck or throat

Symptoms

  • Graves' disease: An autoimmune disorder that stimulates the thyroid gland.
  • Thyroid nodules: Abnormal growths that can produce excess thyroid hormones.
  • Thyroiditis: Inflammation of the thyroid gland, causing temporary hyperthyroidism.
  • Excessive iodine intake: Consuming too much iodine can stimulate the thyroid gland.

Risk factors

  • Family history of thyroid cancer
  • Radiation exposure to the head or neck
  • Certain genetic conditions (e.g., MEN2)
  • Female gender (more common in women)

Treatment

  • Surgery (thyroidectomy) to remove part or all of the thyroid gland
  • Radioactive iodine treatment to destroy remaining cancer cells
  • Thyroid hormone replacement medication
  • Targeted therapy or chemotherapy in advanced cases
