What is Breast Lumps

A lump in the breast can be a concerning symptom, but it's essential to remember that most lumps are not cancerous.

Possible causes:

  • Fibroadenoma: Benign tumor, common in younger women.
  • Cysts: Fluid-filled sacs, often hormonal.
  • Fibrocystic changes: Hormonal fluctuations causing lumps.
  • Breast cancer: Malignant tumor, requires prompt evaluation.

Investigations

  • Clinical breast examination by a breast surgeon
  • USG breast, mammography (for women above 40 years)
  • Biopsy / FNAC: Tissue sample to determine the cause of the lump

Importance of early detection:

  • Breast cancer treatment: More effective when detected early.
  • Peace of mind: Determining the cause of the lump can alleviate concerns.

Treatment:

  • Fibroadenoma can be excised or monitored depending on the size of the lump.
  • Breast cancer needs prompt treatment.
