Nipple Discharge

Nipple Discharge

Nipple discharge can be a concerning symptom, but it's often caused by non-cancerous conditions. Here's a brief overview:

Possible causes:

  • Hormonal changes: Fluctuations during menstrual cycle, pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
  • Galactorrhea: Milky discharge not related to breastfeeding.
  • Infection or inflammation: Mastitis or breast abscess.
  • Benign growths: Papillomas or ductal ectasia.
  • Breast cancer: Rarely, nipple discharge can be a symptom.

Types of discharge:

  • Milky: Often related to hormonal changes or galactorrhea.
  • Clear or sticky: May be caused by ductal ectasia.
  • Bloody or serous: Can be a sign of a papilloma or, rarely, breast cancer.

What to do

  • Schedule a doctor's appointment: For evaluation and potential testing.
  • Imaging tests: Mammogram, ultrasound, or MRI may be recommended.
  • Dictograph or biopsy: May be necessary to determine the cause.

Importance of medical evaluation:

  • Accurate diagnosis: To determine the underlying cause.
  • Ruling out breast cancer: Although rare, nipple discharge can be a symptom.
