What is Varicocele ?

A varicocele is an enlargement of the veins within the scrotum, similar to varicose veins. It's a common condition that can affect fertility and cause discomfort.

Symptoms

  • A lump or swelling in the scrotum
  • A feeling of heaviness or discomfort in the scrotum
  • Pain or aching in the scrotum or testicle
  • Shrinking of the affected testicle
  • Infertility or low sperm count

Complaints

  • Discomfort or pain in the scrotum or testicle
  • Visible swelling or lump in the scrotum
  • Feeling of dragging or pulling in the scrotum
  • Testicular atrophy (shrinkage)

Causes

  • Faulty valves in the veins that prevent blood from flowing properly
  • Increased pressure in the veins
  • Genetic predisposition

Risk Factors

  • Adolescents and young adults
  • Men with a family history of varicoceles
  • Men with infertility issues

Prevention

While varicoceles can't be prevented, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and wearing supportive clothing may help alleviate symptoms.

Diagnosis

  • Physical examination
  • Ultrasound
  • Doppler ultrasound

Treatment

  • Surgery (varicocelectomy) to repair or remove the affected veins
  • Embolization (a minimally invasive procedure to block blood flow to the affected veins)
  • Sclerotherapy (injecting a solution to close off the affected veins)
  • Conservative management (monitoring and managing symptoms)

In some cases, treatment may not be necessary, and the condition may resolve on its own. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, medical intervention may be necessary to alleviate discomfort and address fertility concerns.
