About the Specialty

According to the 2011 census, individuals aged 60 and above constituted 8.6% of India's total population, totalling 103 million. Projections from the UN Population Division (2019) estimate that this proportion will increase to 19.5%, reaching 319 million by 2050. To meet the increased demand and to improve the lives of older people and their communities globally, the United Nations launched the Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030), with the World Health Organization (WHO) guiding its implementation.

In this line Mahatma Gandhi medical college and hospital, Jaipur is started the department of Geriatric Medicine. We as a department will look after the unmet health needs of the elderly population. The department is dedicated to preventive, acute, chronic, rehabilitation and end of life care in collaboration with other departments. The department has a holistic approach to providing personalized comprehensive geriatric care.

At the Department of Geriatric Medicine, our mission is to support the health and well- being of older adults through dedicated, age-sensitive care. We focus on promoting independence and quality of life by addressing both medical and functional needs.

Our team delivers personalized care across all stages—health promotion, disease management, rehabilitation, and supportive care—working closely with other specialties to ensure continuity and coordination.

We are also committed to training healthcare professionals in the principles of healthy aging, preparing them to meet the evolving needs of an aging population.

Aims and Objectives

Aims:

  • To deliver accurate diagnosis and holistic management of health conditions affecting older adults.
  • To promote healthy aging and preserve functional independence through patient-centered care.
  • To empower older adults and their caregivers with knowledge and support for managing chronic conditions.
  • To foster a culture of continuous quality improvement and evidence-based practice in geriatric care.
  • To raise awareness about the importance of early detection, prevention, and timely intervention in age-related health issues.

Objectives:

  • To identify and manage complex geriatric syndromes including frailty, dementia, falls, incontinence, and polypharmacy.
  • To provide integrated, multidisciplinary care that addresses physical, cognitive, emotional, and social aspects of aging.
  • To involve patients and families in care planning, promoting informed decision-making and self-management.
  • To engage in ongoing education, training, and research to improve clinical outcomes and patient experience.
  • To advocate for early screening and interventions that can delay or prevent disability and dependency in older adults.

Facilities

Outpatient Department (OPD) – Geriatrics

We provide specialized outpatient care for older adults, focusing on:

  • Acute care for communicable diseases such as Tuberculosis, Upper and Lower Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI/LRTI), Urinary Tract Infections (UTI), and Acute Gastroenteritis (AGE).
  • Routine follow-ups for chronic conditions, including Hypertension, Diabetes, Chronic Liver Disease (CLD), Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and Heart Failure.
  • Preventive care, including Fall Prevention programs, Vaccinations, and Osteoporosis Screening & Management.
  • ICOPE Screening (Integrated Care for Older People) to promote healthy aging.
  • Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) for a holistic evaluation of health and function.
  • Memory Clinic for dementia screening, diagnosis, and management.

Geriatric Day Care

For patients requiring short-term care and procedures, including:

  • Vaccination
  • Bone marrow biopsy
  • Pig tail insertion
  • USG/CT-guided biopsies
  • Pleural and ascitic tapping
  • IV injections with monitoring

Geriatric Ward & ICU

For older adults requiring hospital admission due to:

  • Acute illnesses needing detailed evaluation
  • Chronic disease-related deconditioning and infections that cannot be managed in an outpatient or day care setting
  • A multidisciplinary approach to optimize health outcomes
