What is Frailty ?

Frailty is a medical condition seen mainly in older adults, where the body loses strength, energy, and ability to recover from stress such as illnesses, injuries, or surgery. It is marked by reduced muscle strength, slower movements, weight loss, and low physical activity. Frailty makes people more vulnerable to falls, hospitalizations, disabilities, and serious health problems, even from minor events. It is often a sign that the body's reserves are running low.

Symptoms

  • Feeling very tired even after small activities
  • Weakness, especially in the muscles
  • Slow walking speed
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Difficulty recovering from illness or injury
  • Trouble with memory or thinking clearly (in some cases)

Complications:

  • Falls and fractures due to poor balance and weak muscles
  • Hospitalization even after minor illnesses
  • Greater risk of infections and slower recovery from diseases
  • Loss of independence, needing help with everyday activities
  • Higher risk of long-term disability and longer healing times
  • Emotional issues such as depression, anxiety, and feelings of isolation

Causes

  • Natural aging process leading to loss of muscle and energy
  • Long-term illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, lung disease, or arthritis
  • Poor nutrition, especially lack of protein and essential vitamins
  • Lack of regular physical activity
  • Chronic inflammation or long-term stress on the body
  • Social isolation and loneliness

Prevention

  • Stay active with regular strength, balance, and aerobic exercises
  • Eat a nutritious diet high in protein, fruits, and vegetables
  • Keep socially active through family, friends, and community activities
  • Manage long-term health conditions effectively
  • Encourage quick recovery and mobilization after illness or surgery

Risk Factors

  • Advancing age
  • Chronic health conditions like diabetes, COPD, heart failure
  • Poor nutrition or low body weight
  • Multiple hospital admissions
  • Social isolation or mental health problems such as depression

Treatment

  • Comprehensive medical evaluation by healthcare professionals, including frailty screening
  • Exercise programs focused on strength training, balance, and flexibility
  • Nutritional support with a focus on adequate protein, calories, and vitamin D
  • Management of chronic illnesses to keep them well-controlled
  • Fall prevention strategies, including home safety improvements
