What is Bladder Tumors?

Bladder tumors, also known as bladder cancer, occur when abnormal cells grow in the bladder lining. There are several types, including urothelial carcinoma (most common), squamous cell carcinoma, and adenocarcinoma.

Symptoms

  • Blood in urine (hematuria)
  • Frequent urination
  • Painful urination
  • Urgent need to urinate
  • Abdominal pain or discomfort

Complaints

  • Discomfort or pain while urinating
  • Visible blood or clots in urine
  • Increased frequency or urgency of urination
  • Nocturia (waking up multiple times to urinate)

Causes

  • Smoking
  • Exposure to certain chemicals (e.g., aromatic amines)
  • Family history of bladder cancer
  • Certain infections (e.g., schistosomiasis)
  • Radiation therapy to the pelvis

Risk Factors

  • Smokers
  • Workers in certain industries (e.g., rubber, chemical)
  • People with family history of bladder cancer
  • Those with certain medical conditions (e.g., bladder stones)

Prevention

  • Quitting smoking
  • Avoiding exposure to certain chemicals
  • Drinking plenty of water
  • Eating a balanced diet

Diagnosis

  • Urinalysis (urine test)
  • Imaging studies (e.g., CT scan, ultrasound)
  • Cystoscopy (visual examination of the bladder)
  • Biopsy (if cancer is suspected)

  • Surgery (e.g., transurethral resection of bladder tumor)
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Immunotherapy
