It Includes infection of skin, subcutaneous tissue and soft tissue infections (Cellulitis, carbuncle , furuncle, fasciitis and necrotising infections ), infections of bone (osteomyelitis) and Joints/prosthetic joints (Septic arthritis or implant infections).

Symptoms

  • Pus Discharge
  • Sinus tract formation
  • Fever
  • Swelling of joint
  • Metallic implant failure
  • Gas in soft tissue

Complications

  • Sepsis/Shock
  • Pathological Fracture
  • Non-healing ulcers
  • Endocarditis
  • Necrotising infections

Causes

  • Bacterial: Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas, Corynebacterium, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and non-mycobacterial tuberculosis, Actinomycosis
  • Fungal: Dematiaceous fungus, Madura foot

  • Chronic steroid use
  • HIV/Haematological malignancy
  • Diabetes
  • Sickle cell anaemia
