Hyperthyroidism

What is Hyperthyroidism?

Excess thyroid hormone affects many different organ systems (table 2). Commonly reported symptoms are palpitations, fatigue, tremor, anxiety, disturbed sleep, weight loss, heat intolerance, sweating, and polydipsia. Frequent physical findings are tachycardia, tremor of the extremities, and weight loss.

How is Hyperthyroidism treatment done?

Your surgeon makes a small incision in the front of the neck and removes the entire thyroid gland. Doctors use minimally invasive surgical techniques to help reduce bleeding and trauma to the surrounding tissue. After the gland is removed, the incision is closed with dissolvable stitches.

Generally, antithyroid drug therapy should be administered until thyroid functions normalize (4-8 weeks). Propranolol is titrated until the resting pulse rate is lower than 80 beats/min. Finally, iodide is administered as SSKI (1-2 drops twice daily for 10-14 days) before the procedure.

The antithyroid drug is continued for three months after radioactive iodine, then tapered. Beta blockers are used to control symptoms before radioactive iodine and can be continued throughout treatment if needed. Iodine-containing medications need to be discontinued several weeks before therapy.

What are the benefits of Hyperthyroidism Treatment?

These hormones affect nearly every organ in your body and control many of your body's most important functions. For example, they affect your breathing, heart rate, weight, digestion, and moods. If not treated, hyperthyroidism can cause serious problems with your heart, bones, muscles, menstrual cycle, and fertility.
