Normal Blood Sugar Levels Chart 2026

One of the easiest ways to detect diabetes is to be familiar with what your normal blood sugar level is. This Blood Sugar Levels Chart Normal by Age, Gender, and Health Status will describe the normal blood sugar range by age, gender, and health status.

The Department of Endocrinology at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital (MGMCH), Jaipur, deals with diabetes (both Type 1 and Type 2), thyroid disorders, obesity, PCOS, osteoporosis, and other rare hormonal diseases. It is part of a hospital with 50+ departments, 400+ doctors, and 1450+ beds, and in 2025 MGMCH was the first academic medical centre in India to be accredited by JCI. This encompasses a clinic for type 1 diabetes, a pediatric endocrinology clinic, and a diabetic foot clinic. There, endocrinologists, wound care specialists, plastic surgeons, and diabetes educators are a team. Patients are supported in their diagnostic laboratories by a dietitian and a physiotherapist.

What Is a Normal Blood Sugar Level?

Blood sugar, also known as glucose, is the energy that your cells use. A normal fasting blood sugar for a nondiabetic adult is 70 - 99 mg/dL. It should be less than 140 mg/dL two hours after eating. The glucose level reading is reported in mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter) in India. When a report indicates "mmol/L," multiply by 18 to convert.

This is a normal blood sugar levels chart for adults (non-diabetic).

Test Normal Prediabetes Diabetes
Fasting 70–99 mg/dL 100–125 mg/dL 126 mg/dL or more
2 hours after eating Under 140 mg/dL 140–199 mg/dL 200 mg/dL or more
HbA1c (3-month average) Below 5.7% 5.7–6.4% 6.5% or more

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) uses these as the general guideline ranges. They are used for normal blood glucose levels of non-diabetics and are also the cut-off for diabetes.

What Is a Normal Fasting Blood Sugar Level?

Fasting is abstaining from any food or drink (including water) for at least 8 hours. The normal fasting blood sugar range is 70 to 99 mg/dL. A score between 100 and 125 is an early warning sign of prediabetes. If the result is 126 or higher, it indicates that the person may have diabetes. It is typically confirmed by repeating the test on a different day.

The normal blood sugar level after eating is…

The blood sugar level increases following a meal and peaks in about an hour. For those without diabetes, it should fall below 140 mg/dL at the 2-hour mark. If the glucose level is 200 mg/dL or higher 2 hours later, it indicates diabetes.

What is a normal blood sugar level for diabetes?

All of these are signs of diabetes and will be discovered again with further testing:

  • Glycosylated hemoglobin A1C ≥ 6.5%
  • Reading ≥ 200 mg/dL for two hours
  • HbA1c of 6.5% or more
  • High blood glucose (blood sugar) level of 200 mg/dL or higher plus symptoms of thirst and frequent urination

Blood Sugar Levels for Diabetics

Diabetic individuals do not set themselves a “normal” range; they set themselves a target range. The ADA recommends:

Time Target
Fasting or before meals 80–130 mg/dL
1–2 hours after eating <180 mg/dL
HbA1c Under 7% (individualized)

Depending on your age, medications, and other health problems, your doctor may have different targets.

Normal Blood Sugar Levels Chart By Age

Age group Typical range for how long the fasting lasts What to know
Children and teens 70–99 mg/dL Same as adults. Setting targets for children with Type 1 diabetes is done by their doctors.
Adults (18–59 years) 70–99 mg/dL The standard adult chart applies.
Adults (60 years and over) 70–99 mg/dL Fasting glucose increases slightly with age.
Diabetics over age 60 have lower targets. About 90-150 mg/dL (target) Slightly lower targets in older adults with diabetes and other diseases help prevent low blood sugars.

Newborns have their own limits and are monitored by a neonatal team.

Normal Blood Sugar Levels for Men and Women

No separate chart is available. The average blood sugar range for women is the same as for adults and the same for men.

The only different thing is what can move the numbers. Swings are common in women during their periods, pregnancy, menopause, and PCOS. Belly fat and lack of activity are two common causes of increased sugar for men. The understanding of triggers is more important than the number of people who are female or male.

Normal Blood Sugar Levels Chart During Pregnancy

  • Fasting: under 95 mg/dL
  • 1 hour after meal: less than 140 mg/dL
  • 2 hours after food: less than 120 mg/dL

Most women get screened for gestational diabetes between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy, earlier if they have risk factors. Always listen to your gynecologist's instructions.

Symptoms of Blood Sugar Level Changes

The symptoms of high blood sugar may include:

  • Increased thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Blurred vision
  • Tiredness
  • Wounds that do not heal well

A low blood sugar ("low) is frequently accompanied by:

  • Shaking
  • Sweating
  • Hunger
  • Dizziness
  • A racing heartbeat
  • Confusion

If lying down and alert, consume 15 grams of quick sugar (3 or 4 glucose tablets or half cup of juice). Recheck after 15 minutes. If the reading is less than 54 mg/dL, it is serious and requires immediate assistance.

What is a blood sugar level too high?

If blood sugar levels are above 180 mg/dL after eating, your diabetes management plan should be reviewed. If the reading is above 300 mg/dL, it is a sign of a medical emergency and should be treated right away. If high sugar is accompanied by vomiting, rapid breathing, stomach pain, or confusion, seek emergency care immediately. MGMCH's emergency line is open 24x7 at +91 8306222198.

Please note that when exercising, blood sugar levels need to be controlled.

Movement is like a free medicine because it pumps glucose out of the blood and into working muscles. Go for 30 minutes of brisk walking five days a week or 150 minutes per week. Walking for 10 minutes after eating reduces blood sugar peaks. Include two days of strength training.

If you use insulin or sugar-lowering drugs, test your sugar level before and after exercise and always have a snack on hand if you become hypoglycemic.

Wrapping Up…

Numbers can only be used when their meaning is understood. Make sure to get a checkup for your fasting blood sugar if you are over the age of 35, overweight, or have a family history of diabetes, and get checked as your doctor recommends. Mahatma Gandhi Hospital (MGMCH) provides testing, specialized endocrinology services, and dietary and physiotherapy treatment all in one place.
